Portland Pie Company: Gluten-Free Calzones!

Did we just discover a gluten-free unicorn? Maybe, maybe not, but the calzones we found at Portland Pie Company are pretty darn dreamy. With seven locations in Maine and one in New Hampshire, these guys seem to really know how to do gluten free safely and deliciously.

First, they make their own basil gluten-free crust. Second, the menu is just awesome. From toasted GF sandwiches to all kinds of pizzas including mushroom goat cheese and roasted veggie, we’d have been totally happy just with that. But they go a couple of steps further with the calzones and VEGAN cheese. We ordered ours with broccoli and vegan cheese, and were delighted when the manager delivered it himself. It was almost too beautiful to eat, but we got over that real quick. The cheese was gooey, the crust was crispy in all the right places, and we were in heaven.

If you’re watching carbs, there are plenty of salads on the menu as well as a wings and hummus plate. They also have GF beer and cider, and a peanut butter chocolate cake for dessert.

Portland Pie Company is not a dedicated gluten-free facility, but they prepare and bake your order separately and are a true celiac favorite in Maine, NH, and beyond. We’ve heard that they even sell their crust in some markets, but have yet to track it down. Regardless, the next time you’re near Manchester, NH or pretty much anywhere in Maine, treat yourself to a calzone at Portland Pie Company and tell them we sent you!
