Boru Noodle Bar is everything you’d want in a noodle joint:  fresh ingredients, large portions, and safe gluten-free options. Ramen is traditionally made with wheat noodles, but Boru has plenty of other choices including a rice noodle dish, an incredible kale salad (really, it’s different from the rest), kimchi, and more. The menu rotates, so call before you go if you’re looking for something in particular. Portions are big, so you just might have enough for lunch the next day. Be sure to notify your server of your dietary needs.

Bowen’s Wine Bar and Grille is another restaurant owned by the Newport Restaurant Group. Situated on the inlet, they’re slightly upscale with a separate gluten-free menu. There’s a raw bar, plenty of seafood,  steak, chicken, and more, along with lot of side dishes and appetizers. Not a dedicated GF facility, but The Newport Restaurant Group takes your safety very seriously and they employ excellent kitchen protocol.

Looking for fine dining? Castle Hill Inn is an upscale inn located in an historic mansion overlooking the ocean. It’s also the location of a Forbes 4 Star restaurant operated by The Newport Restaurant Group, which always takes your safety seriously. The menu is pre fixe only and includes locally sourced seafood, cheeses and other ingredients. All diners with food allergies and sensitivities are served by the manager. They also have an enormous wine list, with over 800 selections.

The Corner Cafe is the perfect little breakfast spot. They can put any breakfast sandwich into a GF wrap or on GF bread, along with the standard eggs, omelettes, and proteins. They also offer breakfast tacos, which can be served on corn tortilla chips. The staff and kitchen understand cross-contamination, making Corner Cafe a celiac favorite.  It’s a small place so it fills up fast, but it’s totally worth the wait (or getting up early!) Try to snag the table with the comfy chairs in the front window for an awesome breakfast and people-watching experience.

Cupcake Charlie’s has 6 locations throughout New England. They are not dedicated gluten-free facilities, but they do make all of their delicious gluten-free cupcakes, trifles and treats separately.  They have dairy-free frosting, too. We’ve had a great experience on every visit, but always use your own judgement when eating out.

Diego’s does Mexican right. Not only do they have a separate menu for gluten-free diners, but they have a vegan one as well. From seared tuna tostada to mini quesadillas & enchiladas (vegan cheese available), you can’t go wrong. And, they know how to prepare your meal separately and safely. If you’re looking for safe burgers and pizza, look no further. The owners of Fifth Element have kids with food allergies, so they totally understand how to prepare your meal safely. They also have a menu that’ll please the whole family from eggplant napoleon and duck poutine to seared scallops, fries from a dedicated fryer, and the aforementioned burgers and pizza.

If you’re in the mood for sushi, head over to I’m Sushi. Tucked into a shopping plaza near the tennis hall of fame, you’ll get great food at a reasonable price. They can also ensure that your meal is safe, and they have gluten-free soy sauce. A hidden gem.

Jo’s American Bistro is a clear GF favorite in Newport. Located in the heart of downtown, they’ve got tons of clearly marked gluten-free items on their regular menu.  They take great care to prepare your meal separately, and they utilize a dedicated gluten-free fryer.  Menu options include burgers, lobster rolls, grilled shrimp with risotto, a hummus plate and lobster carbonara. They also offer clams, salads, and other inherently gluten-free choices. Jo’s is not a dedicated gluten free facility, but they are a celiac favorite. Inform your server before ordering.

Lucia Italian Restaurant offers great gluten-free options. Appetizers include lentil soup, salad, stewed beans, sautéed spinach and more. Entrees include all kinds of pasta – and we mean all kinds. They don’t make gluten-free pizza, but the pasta is so good, you won’t miss it. The owners are from Italy and the dining room is vintage, but that only adds to the charm.

Don’t be deceived by the name – this is much more than a shake place. Modeled after traditional Australian diners of the 80’s, Meg’s serves up Australian and American breakfast and lunch in a relaxed, hip setting. They can put any breakfast or lunch sandwich on gluten-free bread, the veggie egg bowls are outstanding, and Meg’s Muesli is excellent. Lunch includes burgers, chicken sandwiches, the Aussie Lamb Sandwich with salads and vegetarian options as well. Don’t forget a shake for dessert! They can even make them with macadamia milk. Meg’s is not a dedicated gluten-free facility, but they understand how to prepare your meal safely. Inform your server of your dietary needs.

The Mooring Seafood Kitchen and Bar

The Mooring Seafood Kitchen and Bar just might be the perfect spot for a gluten-free meal in Newport and here’s why – they’re in a great location on Sayers Wharf, they’ve got outdoor seating, and an awesome separate gluten-free menu. Appetizers include a raw bar, salads, and even crab cakes. Entrees include a salmon BLT, burgers, chicken sandwiches and more, as well as seafood dishes including seafood risotto, cod and scallops. The Mooring even has a vegetarian menu and a kids menu They’re not a dedicated gluten-free facility, but they do take great care to avoid cross-contamination.

If you want to add a healthy dimension to your Newport visit, stop into Power of Juice. They’ve got freshly squeezed juices and a menu of GF/vegan puddings, “pestos,”  and treats. There are also many kinds of nut milks. Never tried a juice place? They’ve got free samples, and they’ll even deliver! Power of Juice is 100% vegan and nearly 100% GF. They prepare all GF items separately and safely.

Salvation Cafe offers a bit of eclectic pizazz to the Broadway restaurant scene. In a restored barn dining room, they serve up innovative appetizers and entrees with plenty of gluten-free options. The menu may rotate, but at this writing offerings included chipotle parsnip hummus with corn chips, quinoa and root vegetable salad, grilled tempeh curry, pad thai and more. The kitchen is not dedicated gluten free, but the chef and staff follow excellent cross-contamination protocol. During the warmer months, there’s even an outdoor patio and tiki bar.

The Smoke House is a BBQ joint owned by The Newport Restaurant Group. They have a separate gluten-free menu with lots of BBQ options, as well as lobster rolls, burgers and more. They even have gluten-free dessert options, depending on the day (call first). This is an open-air restaurant right on the pier. Totally relaxed and fun!

Stoneacre Brasserie

Stoneacre Brasserie is the perfect combination of neighborhood restaurant and French bistro. Gluten-free breakfast options include corned beef hash, vegetable hash, eggs, oatmeal and more. Lunch and dinner includes sandwiches like burgers, coconut curried chicken and BLT’s, as well as tuna nicoise salad and more. They can even make french onion soup with their awesome GF bread! They use Peace of Mind crust which is made in NH, they’ve got vegan cheese, and they carry incredible desserts from Gluten-Free Territory in NH as well. They also use excellent kitchen protocols. Not dedicated gluten free, but a celiac fave.

Knead Donuts makes their gluten-free, flourless donuts completely separately. They bake them instead of frying,  using dedicated pans and equipment. Don’t let the name fool you – The Malted Barley is awesome. Known for their beer selection and house made pretzels, they offer both gluten free. This means giant pretzel sandwiches like beef burgers, BLT’s,  black bean burgers and more, along with plenty of safe beer choices.
