In 2010, Patrick Lynch and Ali Fong entered the City of Boston’s Food Truck Contest on a whim. They surprised themselves by coming out with a win and opened their first Asian-inspired food truck, Bon Me the following year. Since then, they’ve grown to 7 brick and mortar eateries, 8 food trucks, and 2 food carts…with lots of safe gluten-free options!
Although they’re named after the classic bahn me Vietnamese sandwich, Bon Me has plenty of gluten-free menu options. In fact, the only gluten used in their kitchens is in the rolls for the sandwiches and soba noodles. Gluten-free options include Ali’s Pho made with rice noodles, the Korean Bon Me Bap, the Bun Bowl (a Vietnamese noodle salad made with rice noodles) and many other dishes made with rice, rice noodles, seasoned meats and tofu, tangy sauces, and other culturally inspired flavors.
Bon Me is not a dedicated gluten-free facility, but they do take your safety seriously. All managers have ServeSafe and Allergen Awareness certificates, and all gluten-containing items are stored separately. In addition, gluten-free orders are prepared and delivered by the manager, using fresh gloves.
As of this writing, some Bon Me locations are closed due to the Coronavirus, so check their social media and/or website to find out where you can still pick up a safe meal to go.
Let’s work hard to support Bon Me and all of our favorite gluten-free eateries during this crazy time. Stay safe, friends. We’re all in this together.
