Shakahari

Gluten Free Indian Old Saybrook

Gluten Free Indian Old Saybrook: Shakahari is a new 100% vegetarian restaurant, “serving authentic Indian vegetarian and vegan dishes.” Not sure about you, but we found this to be very exciting! The menu rotates periodically, but there are always some really delicious gluten-free offerings. When we visited, we had the Masala Dhosa, which is a rice crepe with spiced potato filling, because we don’t ever pass up a crepe. And it was excellent!  We also had the Aloo Gobi, which is potatoes, cauliflower and spices simmered in a tomato sauce. They even make a gluten-free bread from millet and corn flour.

Everything at Shakahari is made from scratch – even the occasionally used cottage cheese, and it just feels like a home cooked meal. The dining room is lovely, with grays and creams and pretty table settings. The owner and chef explained the entire menu to us, and is quite passionate about cooking the best vegetarian and vegan dishes for her customers. So if you’re ever down by the shore, stop in at Shakahari for a bite, and get the Masala Dhosa, one of the more exciting gluten-free meals we’ve had!

*Shakahari is not a dedicated gluten-free facility. Please use your own judgement when eating out.
