The Jewish High Holidays – Gluten Free & Kosher!

Preparing for the Jewish High Holidays is a lot of work, and making traditional foods is a big part of the process. Whether you you’re making your entire meal gluten free or just parts of it, we’re here to help!  We’ve partnered with Connecticut resident Liz Rueven of the nationally known Kosher Like Me, to bring you healthy, festive recipes that’ll wow your guests. But first, we’ve listed markets and bakeries around the state where you can order traditional Jewish gluten-free foods, many of them kosher. Remember to get your order in soon, though, as the holidays are coming up quick!

By The Way Bakery has 4 locations –  3 in New York City, and their most recently opened location in Greenwich, CT. Their facilities are dedicated gluten free and all of their baked goods are dairy-free as well. All items are kosher pareve, approved and overseen by OK Kosher. Most items contain egg.  They have a beautiful high holiday menu(see photo, right), including apple cake, rugelach, chocolate hazelnut torte, and marble cheesecake (yes, dairy free!). Click here for their complete high holiday menu, and be sure to order by Sunday, September 17, 2017!

For folks living in and around Hartford, Crown Market is the go-to place for all things kosher. And, they’ve not only remodeled the entire store, but they’ve also added plenty of gluten-free options, both in the freezer and in their famous prepared foods section. They always have a big frozen section full of Katz Gluten-Free baked goods (we particularly love the donuts), but they now note gluten-free items on their prepared food and catering menu, including tzimmes, stuffed cabbage, potato kugel, chopped liver, whipped potatoes and more.  Click here for their complete high holiday menu. Orders must be placed by 9/10/19.

Garelick & Herbs has 4 locations in Fairfield County – Southport, Westport, New Canaan, and Greenwich. They are a cafe and catering business, and they do everything – weddings, parties, mitzvahs, and all the Jewish holidays. They can also do gluten-free and kosher on request. This holiday season, along with all the festive meal options that are already inherently gluten free, they’re making gluten-free matzoh balls, herb roasted chicken, brisket gravy, and turkey gravy. They also have gluten-free brownies. You can check out their entire holiday menu right here.

*Please note that the brisket recipe below is naturally gluten free, but the kugel recipes were created for traditional, wheat-containing ingredients. We will be making both kugel recipes substituting gluten-free ingredients in the coming weeks, and will report back. Will our pasta be up for the challenge? Stay tuned!

Red Wine and Tomato Brisket With a Twist

“A platter of braised brisket is the centerpiece of many Jewish holiday meals. Here is a recipe that’s basic enough to accompany various side dishes, yet different enough to add something new to the table. The sauce is a combination of heady allspice and cinnamon, wine and tomato, braised with the beef into a rich succulent sauce.”

Caramelized Onion and Poppy Seed Kugel

“Even the most health conscious cooks will likely whip up a luscious, highly caloric (gluten-free)noodle pudding at some point in the next month as Jews everywhere, celebrate four holidays over five short weeks.  This rapid-fire succession of holidays requires lots of planning and some easy recipes that are guaranteed to please a crowd. Kugel is a versatile and variable concept. Depending on the region your family hails from, or the place you currently live, your kugel may be creamy and cheese laden, savory with  fresh herbs and veggies, or stacked with potato and onion layers simply seasoned with salt and pepper. Add thinly sliced firm apples or slightly under ripe pears from the orchard?”

Zucchinni and Potato Kugelletes

“They serve a crowd and can be assembled in advance. They can lean sweet and creamy or savory and sassy.  And they’re a perfect vehicle for tossing in extra vitamin packed veggies and fresh flavors with snipped herbs of most any kind.”

A very happy and healthy new year from Gluten-Free Connecticut!
