SoNo Baking Company and Cafe – Gluten-Free French Pastries!
SoNo Baking Company and Cafe has 3 locations in South Norwalk, Darien, and Westport. All of the baking is done in South Norwalk, with it’s big, open and airy kitchen/cafe. However, their delicious gluten-free treats can be had at all three places. We stopped in at the Darien bakery, looking for a little pick-me-up on a rainy and cold Sunday afternoon. We had already eaten lunch, and we were just looking for a little dessert, figuring their gluten-friendly options would be limited. We were wrong. They had no less than 6 gluten-free desserts, so, in the name of research, we tried every one of them. We had French macaroons, plain and chocolate covered, as well as macaroon cookie sandwiches, with jelly and chocolate filling. We also had flourless chocolate cake, Sarah Bernhardt cookies (chocolate heaven), a flourless chocolate cake roulade, and a vegan cookie, that ate more like a snack, and delightfully so. Everything had a taste of sophistication and elegance, but in such a relaxed and inviting atmosphere, which is exactly what John Barricelli, the owner, strives for. John brings a wealth of experience and talent to his business, having worked for numerous fine restaurants, and on the Martha Stewart Show. You’ll have to stick with salads and proteins on their cafe menus, as they do not make gluten-free bread. But we know it’d be delicious if they did….hint….
South Norwalk location serves breakfast, lunch, and Sunday brunch. Darien serves lunch, and their downtown Westport location serves lunch as well.
