Toymakers Cafe – Game On!
We picked the perfect Fall day for venturing out to Falls Village in Canaan to visit Toymakers Cafe, except for the fog and pouring rain. Undeterred, we went anyway, and we’re so glad we did. Toymakers is a very popular spot for motorcycle fans, and now we know why. Â They are perfectly situated on the beautiful 40 mile stretch of Route 7 between New Milford and southern Massachusetts, a popular motorcycle route in nice weather. Â When we arrived, the place was relatively empty, except for a small table of locals drinking coffee and chatting quietly. We talked with owners Greg and Ann Bidou for a bit, and then sat down. Ann, who is gluten-free, makes their GF bread herself. She also bakes GF treats. The place is warm and inviting, with walls covered in artwork. The menu offers GF waffles and french toast, both prepared in the waffle iron. How cool is that? You can also get any sandwich on Ann’s GF bread. As dedicated researchers, we ordered one of everything. The waffles were crisp and beautiful, the portobello panini sandwich with housemade pesto was terrific, and the french toast made us wonder if it really was gluten free. Greg also brought over one of Ann’s GF apple cider doughnuts, which were as good as any we’ve had. Quite possibly better. Â So no matter the weather, take your gluten-free on the road and try this place. And if you choose a Sunday in warm weather, you’ll be joined by all sorts of cool bikes and cars!
*Please note that this restaurant is not a dedicated gluten-free facility.
