The Purple Rooster: Breakfast, Lunch, & Chicken Parm over Ravioli

Where in Massachusetts can you dine on gluten-free breakfast and lunch, AND take home a chicken pot pie for dinner, all celiac safe? The Purple Rooster in Plainville, of course!

gluten-free breakfast and lunch

Diana Martinez opened the Purple Rooster exactly 11 years ago. Shortly thereafter, when she was diagnosed with celiac disease, she revamped the entire menu, which is now 98% gluten free. The only gluten-containing items that she keeps on hand are bread and pancake mix, and for those items she uses a dedicated prep area, toaster, griddle, utensils, butter, and oil. The rest of the kitchen is gluten free, including the oven, and the menu is 5 pages long. Diana also offers a vegan menu, which has become quite popular recently.

Here’s a little sampling of what’s on the menu:

  • Pancakes
  • Potato pancakes
  • Veggie burgers (scratch)
  • Rice bowls
  • Pad Thai
  • Grilled cheese
  • BLT (vegan option)
  • Quesadillas
  • Vegan hotdogs
  • Salads
  • Smoothies (vegan available)
  • Baked goods

But that’s not all. Diana also offers prepared meals, including chicken and waffles, chicken parm over ravioli, Asian dishes, mac and cheese, Swedish meatballs and more. Pre-order is required for prepared foods.

Upon arriving at The Purple Rooster, all customers are asked about food allergies or sensitivities. Diana even keeps a file box filled with the dietary profiles of customers with multiple food allergies, so that she can be sure to make deliberate and safe substitutions. She claims that she can provide a meal for nearly every food allergy, and we believe her.

Everything at The Purple Rooster is made from scratch, and Diana’s sensitivity to gluten from both ingestion and touch ensures that the risk of cross-contamination is low.   The servers are very well educated, and she affectionately calls them her “other” children. Diana is passionate about serving delicious and safe food, just like mom used to make, and we’re so grateful for her motherly commitment to the gluten-free community.

*The Purple Rooster is currently raising funds to find a new location for the restaurant. Their current building has been sold, and the lease is ending sooner than they had anticipated. If you’d like to help them out, follow this link to donate.
