We have just discovered the best gluten-free bagels ever. For those who have not always been gluten free, you may remember real bagels made with real flour. The best of them were just dense enough, had a great chew, with that unique boiled & baked texture and flavor.
After 10 years of living gluten free, and sampling more disappointing gluten-free bagels than you could shake a cream cheese knife at, we have found the best ones yet at Bagels Plus in North Conway, NH. And, they’re vegan to boot!
Bagels Plus was purchased in 2017 by Frank and Carol-Ann Dahlmeyer, longtime visitors to the area. They refreshed the entire store, expanded offerings, and continue to keep the entire valley, both customers and businesses, stocked with great bagels.
They make gluten-free bagels only one day per week, when the rest of the kitchen is quiet, to avoid cross-contamination. They also use dedicated utensils and equipment, as well as a dedicated pot for boiling. Once the gluten-free bagels are done, they’re individually wrapped to keep them safe.
Oh but the chew – these gluten-free bagels are chewy but not too chewy, and they’re dense but not too dense. They toast perfectly, and they eat like a real bagel.
We don’t know the ingredients or what they’re doing to make these bagels taste and feel so authentic, but as long as they keep making them, we’re ok with that. (It’s gotta to be some kind of magic.)
At our visit this past weekend, we learned that the demand for GF bagels is growing, and they’re doing all they can to keep up. They’re open for breakfast and lunch only, and orders must be placed online or by phone, with drive-through and porch pick-up available. Go early and be patient, as the wait can be long. It’s sooooo worth it!
