Woodman’s: New England’s GF Fried Seafood Mecca

Woodman’s of Essex has been serving up celiac-safe, gluten-free fried seafood for over 100 years. It all began in 1916, when Leonard “Chubby” Woodman decided to celiac-safe gluten-free fried seafoodfry up a clam at his roadside stall on Main Street. The rest, they say, is history.

Woodman’s still uses the same corn flour coating that Chubby used, and every fried seafood menu item they make is gluten free, and made in dedicated gluten-free fryers. They also make french fries, sweet potato fries, and chicken tenders – all gluten free as well.

The only non-GF item made in the kitchen is the onion rings, which are coated with Chubby’s special recipe, in a separate area and fryer. However, if you catch them on a slower day, they’ll make GF fried onion rings on request.

Woodman’s is a pretty special place to many, and has been for over a century, but not because it’s gluten free. It’s because they consistently serve quality fried seafood that’s as great looking as it is delicious. And that makes them doubly special to us! If you don’t live nearby or have never been, add Woodman’s to your GF bucket list. You’ll be so glad you did!
